Made in memory of my friend Ellen Cantor who passed away in April 2013, The Lovers is based on the lovers card of the Tarot deck, a well-worn pack of which Ellen would carry with her at all times and consult with regularly, and Henry Longellow’s epic poem The Song of Hiawatha, which Ellen had made a suite of drawings about just before she died. Originally intended as a design for an egg-tempera painting, the drawing was exhibited by Mustafa Hulusi’s poster project in Shoreditch, London in June 2018.
