Spread Wide

An exercise in artistic and literary falsification, this experimental work conceived by Paul Buck takes as raw material the correspondence between himself and Kathy Acker from the early Eighties, a period when Acker was writing Great Expectations and trying to leave America for London. Spread Wide confronts issues of appropriation, sampling, and plagiarism that were central to Acker’s writing method and style. My contribution is an exercise in stylistic impersonation that takes the narrative of Dario Argento’s film Deep Red as a device to explore Acker’s sexual politics, her use of popular horror and porn tropes and the influence of Georges Bataille. My contribution to the book was ‘The Process (Live and Ill from the Filthy Womb of Blood)’. A PDF can be found here.
