Beau Dick: Devoured By Consumerism

Catalogue essay ‘In the House of the Man Eater’ commissioned by LaTiesha Fazakas for the posthumous show Devoured by Consumerism by the First Nations artist Beau Dick at White Columns gallery, New York in 2019. The essay discusses metaphors of consumption within the cosmology of the Kwakwaka’wak peoples of British Columbia and their relevance for environmental ethics. It focusses particularly on the rites of the Hamatsa secret society which Beau Dick was a high-ranking member of.
