Authority Figures (The Eerie and Uncanny Invasion of One Person’s World by Another Person’s World) is a work made in collaboration with the social anthropologist Kelly Fagan Robinson for the group show ‘Morphologies of Invisible Agents’ created by SMRU in April 2019. Authority Figures combines video works made by Cussans and Robinsons in previous projects which express shared concerns in their distinct practices: namely obstacles to effective personal communication across different semiotic registers and within hierarchical and asymmetrical power structures.

The installation was designed to generate dialogues with the public about how we might represent these kinds of relationships diagrammatically. Visitors were invited to contribute drawings which were added to the installation during the exhibition.
