The Lovers

Made in memory of my friend Ellen Cantor who passed away in April 2013, The Lovers is based on the lovers card of the Tarot deck, a well-worn pack of which Ellen would carry with her at all times and consult with regularly, and Henry Longellow’s epic poem The Song of Hiawatha, which Ellen had made a suite of drawings about shortly before she died. Originally intended as a design for an egg-tempera painting, the drawing was exhibited by Mustafa Hulusi’s poster project in Shoreditch, London in June 2018. The adage on the scroll at the bottom was Ellen’s own and the title to a posthumous exhibition at the Bortolozzi gallery in Berlin in 2018.
